Artist's Description
A 10"x10" relief sculpture of IX CHEL, pronounced (Eshell), one of the most important and ancient of Mayan deities. The Goddess of the moon, of love, fertility, of medicine and the textile arts. Ix Chel is a shapeshifting shaman with three aspects. A young sensual woman, the Mother and the Crone. As a young woman she appears as the morning star with the spirit of growth and vitality. As the Mother weaver her spinning drop spindle is the motion at the center of the universe. And as the Crone she appears as the aged jaguar, Goddess of midwifery and medicine, the grandmother physician. As a Moon Goddess Ix Chel is in control of the tides, the rain and even the embryotic fluid in the womb. Mayan woman seeking a fruitful marriage would pilgrimage to her sanctuary on the Island of Woman off the Mexican Yucatan. The original relief will soon be for sale.
About James RODERICK
James Joseph Roderick grew up in Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the 50's and 60's and attended the Art Institute of Boston in the early 70's. Since moving to Colorado in the mid-nineties, his art has fully turned into an honoring of the Goddess, the Divine Feminine in us all. He has painted over 60 images of The Virgin of Guadalupe.
